ABOUT

When you make your own clothes, you finally get the garment you want.

There are many reasons to make your own clothes. You can express your individuality; you can wear a garment that fits you perfectly; you enjoy the superb quality of hand made clothes.

For me it was inevitable that I’d make my own clothes.

Sewing is an art.

christeen_closeupMy Mother was a beautiful seamstress and as little girl I would sit and watch in awe as she would sew and bead the beautiful gowns that she made for her clients. I would say to her “When I grow up I want to be just like you.”

She would sit me on her knee in front of the sewing machine and teach me how to sew.

“Sewing is an art”, she would tell me.

“Every seam must be perfect. The inside of the garment should look as good as the outside”.

I loved the way she would turn a simple picture into a work of art.

As the years went on I helped with her beautiful creations and it was not too long before I began to make and wear my own creations.

Teaching others to sew.

I ran my own made-to-measure Bridal and Evening wear business in Sydney for many years. It was made even more special when my handmade creations won Gown of the Year 3 years running.

I loved what I did in my business… But want to know a secret?

My real passion is teaching others how to sew and create their own garments, giving them the freedom to wear what they want. I love watching their faces light up as they realise what they have achieved after their first lesson.

I attended Emily McPherson fashion college and trained in advanced pattern making at RMIT. I gained a Work Place Training and Assessment certificate qualifying me to teach you the art of sewing. But I owe the skills that I have to my mother, as she taught me so well.

Sew n Sew online sewing school

I noticed that sewing schools always assumed a level of knowledge that the student may or may not have. They didn’t help the people who knew absolutely nothing about sewing at all. There were so many people out there who had fabulous ideas and a desire to create unique clothing, but didn’t know what to do after turning on the sewing machine. Perhaps that’s you?

I created Sew n Sew to teach you how to understand your machine, your fabric, your patterns, all the basic skills, darts zippers, gathering and then how to sew a skirt.

Sew n Sew Sewing School is unique in that it teaches sewing in very simple stages, which progressively develops and enhances the students’ knowledge and ability to sew.

Lessons are practical in nature but at the same time include all the theory you need.

Over the years I have taught many students the art of sewing / designing and making their own creations. With the knowledge and inspiration received, they now have enough confidence in their own skills to sew their creations for themselves or their loved ones.

Without doubt, doing the beginners course with Christeen was the best thing I have done a long while. The course taught me the basics of sewing, from using my machine properly, sewing terminology, basic clothing construction, reading patterns and buying fabric. It gave me the confidence to have a go  at making pyjamas, skirts, and dresses on my own and I have been really happy with the results.

In less than three months I have gone from a total novice, someone who didn’t know how to thread a needle to making four outfits. I am currently making a beautiful Italian wool coat. My mum is in disbelief of my new found ability to sew. I owe it all to the teachings of my sewing teacher Christeen. She has transformed me into a budding seamstress. Her class are easy to follow step by step and the atmosphere is very calming. In such a short time  I can take the knowledge I have to make a number beautiful outfits.
